Project 2025: A Threat to Women’s Rights in the US and Beyond

By Lady Whistledown

I will not sit back as one of the most detrimental campaigns in America continues to gain momentum. If this project does pass through, it will be stripping away the rights of women in America and beyond. What America does, other nations follow. Supposedly “the land of the free” and a symbol of progressive values, yet this nation continues to step backwards every day and it will cause the rest of the world to step backwards with them.

But firstly, what is Project 2025? It is a 922 page proposal written to dismantle the US government and replace it with a new conservative vision. The plan was drafted by the Heritage Foundation, an influential think tank led by former Trump administration officials, which aims to promote conservative public policies. The project’s key proposals regarding abortion include:

1. Personhood Definition

The project establishes the definition of life beginning at conception. This could lead to increased restrictions not only on abortion but also on certain forms of contraception and assistive reproductive technologies like IVF. With current policies in certain states making abortion already too difficult as it is, the implementation of this policy would entrap millions of women into continuing with unwanted pregnancies.

2. Regulation of Abortion Pills

It calls for the FDA to rescind its approval of mifepristone, a commonly used abortion pill, and to impose stricter regulations on its distribution, including requiring in-person prescriptions and limiting its use to the first seven weeks of pregnancy.

3. Enforcement of the Comstock Act

The project proposes the enforcement of the Comstock Act, which will prohibit the mailing of abortion-related medication and equipment, essentially preventing people from accessing these resources across the country.

4. Removing the enforcement of federal laws that require hospitals to provide emergency abortion care

This could endanger the health of pregnant individuals facing life-threatening situations.

If this list doesn’t terrify you, I want you to apologize to your mother this instant. The state should not have the right to make decisions about women’s bodies, especially when it is already difficult enough to get an abortion in some states. If these policies are taken into action, the lives of many young girls and women will be at risk. I refuse to live in a future where my daughter is living with fewer rights than me. Women in history have already ardently advocated for our rights. We must do these women justice by preventing governments from stepping backwards in this way.
